A special person was born on July 14, 1971 that would positively impact the lives of everyone around him for the 20 short years he shared Earthside. That person was Tim Best. Born to Pat and Doug Best of Greenville, Tim grew up in the area and left a lasting impression on everyone that knew him. Special is understatement when it comes to trying to explain Tim’s persona, his charisma and his demeanor. Someone who would never give up or settle; who made everyone around him smile; who inspired those around him to do great things and be great people. Tim was naturally gifted at all things athletic and sports; from baseball, track, cross-country, soccer, wrestling, football and swimming, he had natural ability and worth ethic to excel in whatever discipline he set his mind to. In fact, he still holds a record at Greenville High School for wrestling.
But it just so happened that Tim liked another sport outside of school. This was one that he took a strong liking to at just 3 years of age watching his father ride motorcycles at Ludlow Falls. After seeing his dad, Doug, ride, Tim insisted he get a motorcycle too. At the time, he didn’t know how to ride a bicycle yet, so he taught himself to ride, in order for his parents to get him a minibike. Then, he started riding. His first race was at Cowtown Arena in Brookville, Ohio at just 5 years of age. (There may have been some age fibbing because he was so determined to race even though he wasn’t quite old enough.) At first, Tim raced motocross, even attending the Mini Olympics in Florida in 83 or 84 and then transitioning into flat track shortly thereafter. Tim quickly picked up the speed of flat track and went on to win the Michigan State 250 Championship in 1985 riding for Howard Rehmert & Rehmert’s Kawasaki. Tim climbed his way through the flat track ranks (Novice, Junior and Expert back in those days), quickly earning his Expert points after turning Junior. The year he turned Expert, his first three races were a triple header starting on Friday night at none other than Greenville, Ohio for a half mile. He spent the night chasing Morehead and ended up crashing but used his leg to save the pipe on his motorcycle, knowing he had more races ahead of him for the weekend. Tim’s Dad and crew went to work fixing the bike in preparation for the Indy Mile on Saturday (doing so successfully, but without any sleep). Then, on Sunday, Tim would debut a new 600 at the DuQuoin Mile in Illinois. Overall, a great start to his Expert career. A career that was cut shorter than most.
On June 25, 1991, God called Tim home as he was riding his street bike. And just as Tim transitioned so gracefully from motocross to flat track, Tim transitioned from Earthly joy to Heavenly joy, and his family has no doubt that he’s smiling down on the races happening here today and every time a motorcycle takes the track. Tim’s joy and light transcend time and his memories live on from those around him continuing to share his stories. Though Tim is greatly missed by all, it’s obvious that God had a plan and purpose for him that he could only carry out in Heaven. And those that were blessed to know him are forever grateful for their time spent with him.
So, if you see a picture of Tim Best on his motorcycle (like on a sticker you may be holding), know that it represents far more than just a cool guy going fast on a cool motorcycle; it represents a life well-lived, full of joy and perseverance, and love and he would want all of that goodness shared with each and every one of you.
Kaitlynn, Shane and Owen Osberg are the founders of Howie Doin Roger That Racing, a 501(c)(3) organization. They want to pay homage to their grandfathers while sharing their love of racing and the amazing things it's done in their lives. With the support of family, friends and the community, they look forward to continued growth of the organization.
We are a four generation flat track racing family. Our family lineage started with Howard (Howie) Rehmert and Roger Comer at the races many moons ago. So after seeing a need for energetic, nonprofit work in this area, we formed our organization as a way to give back and honor them as they were always helping others at the track.
We focus on making the maximum positive effort for our community by providing racers and families financial, educational and emotional support on and off the track to ensure they enjoy the process. We also provide positive, interactive marketing experiences and content for our supporters that mutually benefits our racing community.
